My first day to host the Wolfie World Tour is here! Welcome Vivian, visitors and of course Shaun. I love that Vivian shows in this post how both series are connected. I must honestly admit I noticed the mentions of Shaun in WOLF SIGNS and WOLF FLIGHT but reading those books I was so focused on TJ (uhm I might have a bit of a crush on TJ...) that I didn't really notice Shaun until I was reading TJ's book. And boy did I notice him then! I think I immediately asked Vivian if there was going to be a book about him and she confirmed that, once again making me a happy reader.
Viv, the floor is yours!
The Takhini Wolves series is a part of the Granite Lake world, and there’s a lot of overlap, not the least being the familiar character of Shaun Stevens as the hero of BLACK GOLD. I thought it would be fun to show you a few glimpses today of Shaun in the previous four GLW books.
First time he’s mentioned? Bottom of the first page of WOLF SIGNS. Yup, Shaun’s been around for a looooooong time.
Robyn paced a few steps away before turning back to face him, her hands flowing smoothly as she spoke to her brother in American Sign Language. “I understand, Tad. You need to take the job. I’m still going to Granite.”
“No way. You can’t go by yourself.”
“You have.”
“But that’s different, Robyn.”
“Don’t be a jerk. I don’t have a penis so I can’t go backcountry alone?”
Tad raised his eyebrows. “It’s not the lack of plumbing, sis, and you know it. I very seldom go bush alone and if I do meet anyone, it’s not a big deal. I’m male, I’m strong and I’m not deaf. How do you plan on talking to strangers?”
Robyn threw a pillow his way before lifting her hands to sign at him. “I’ll take some notepads. What are the chances of meeting anyone at Granite this time of year? We always go in February because no one else does. I’m packed, the food is packed, and I’ve got time off work from the bakery. You even booked a helicopter ride in for me with your buddy Shaun. I’ve never gotten to fly in before.
In WOLF FLIGHT, we discover that Shaun is more than just a buddy, he’s actually the business partner of hero Tad, whose sister Robyn got the helicopter flight in that previous quote. Shaun likes the ladies, even considers hitting on Robyn (if Tad wasn’t very insistent that idea was a hell no). Shaun’s all about friends, not so much about pack. He’s the kind of guy you’d like by your side in a tough spot. Blunt, even-keeled, laid-back.
Bloody wolf hormones.
“Doesn’t it bother you?” Tad asked. “Being out of control of your own destiny?”
“What are you talking about?”
“The wolf. The way being a wolf changes your whole life.” Tad stared into space, his fingers fidgeting with the arms of his chair.
Shaun scrunched up his face. “Uh, no… I mean, so I can change into a wolf. It’s no big deal. It’s not like I have uncontrollable urges to howl or shift involuntarily when the moon is full. My wolf is just a part of who I am. An amazing, completely honest part of me.”
Tad snorted. “You’ve never been so poetic in your life. Damn it, I’m talking about the stupid wolf hormones. Don’t try to tell me they don’t dictate your life. They sure as hell do mine. We can’t even decide who to marry without our wolves approving.”
His partner laughed as he leaned back on the table. “Mates? You’re worried about finding a mate again. Tad? Holy crap, you need to get laid.”
Finally, in WOLF TRACKS, Shaun is instrumental in getting hero TJ and his sweetie some needed one-on-one time so they can figure out their interesting relationship. This is a bigger deal than you’d think at first—considering that wolves operate on a strict hierarchy, Shaun basically had to stay hidden for the duration in order to keep TJ and Pam’s location a secret. Otherwise he could have been ordered to spill the beans early. It takes a true friend to be willing to defy all the Alpha wolves in the entire north.
The loudening flap flap of the propeller blades reached them, and Pam’s eyes widened. “What’s he doing?”
She scrambled to the side, and her jaw fell open as the chopper lifted. The air pressure flattened them to the ground as Shaun got away. TJ waved at his friend as the aircraft rose, hovering over the field for a moment before rotating and taking off into the distance.
“What is going on? Stop it…come back.” Pam ran after the helicopter, waving her arms frantically before returning, her beautiful brown eyes wide. “He left us. What is he doing?”
TJ stood and pulled her back into his arms. “Don’t worry, it’s okay. He’ll be back.”
She relaxed. “Well, that’s good. How long do we have before he returns?”
“A week.”
In terms of how else the series mesh, Shaun and Tad were both a part of one of the Takhini packs (I mentioned that at the first stop of the tour—two packs in Whitehorse) based out of Whitehorse, but they usually lived/slept close to where their planes were stored—the community of Haines Junction. This small Yukon town is the junction point for continuing up the Alaskan highway to Anchorage, or turning southward to the ocean and Haines—where the Granite Lake pack now resides.
Other than Shaun, the similarities in the stories…hmmm, sarcasm? Light-hearted discussions? The setting of the Yukon and Alaska wilderness, and gold rush towns such as Dawson City. A happily ever after—and this time because the story is longer, there’s more time for all of it. More adventures, more confusion. More wolfies.
Come back tomorrow for an excerpt with Shaun and TJ from BLACK GOLD. Be sure to leave a comment here to be included in the draw for the Grand prize of a $50 gift certificate. Also, check out my blog for the daily Friends of the Wolfies contest!

As part of the NEVER ENOUGH Blog Tour I will not be offering a review, a (character-)interview or guestblog by Lauren Dane. I've decided to go for a Quotes-Post (thanks Leontine! You set off the light-bulb moment). It will be slightly different than the Quotes-Posts I've done earlier because this time I also asked the author for her favorite quotes, since I love hearing from others what lines speak to them, and I'm even more fascinated to know from the authors themselves.
Turns out that combined Lauren and I had 34 favorite quotes! Lauren sent me 9 and I marked 25...Yes, 25!
Of those 34 we have 2 exactly the same and I've decided to add 7 of mine to this post to match Lauren's other 7. But first let me offer you the blurb of this wonderful book. I devoured this book in almost one sitting and it will be given a 9.4/10, Adrian and Gillian blew my socks off! (My review will follow later this week).
And now the quotes:
Lauren Dane's and my Favorite Quotes in common:
Some of Lauren Dane's Favorite Quotes:
Some of my Favorite Quotes:
So those were the quotes!
Be on the lookout for my review coming Friday...and check out Leontine's Beefcake Interview with the man himself, Adrian Brown!!
Now for the giveaway. Yes, there's a giveaway...
=====GIVEAWAY=====GIVEAWAY=====GIVEAWAY=====
Lauren Dane has generously offered a bound galley of NEVER ENOUGH for one of my commenters.
To enter the giveaway just tell me what one of your favorite quote is. This might be from a romance novel or other novels or from a famous person. Your prerogative! If you don't have a favorite quote, tell me which one of the NEVER ENOUGH quotes above you liked the most.
Good to know:
This giveaway runs from today until Sunday August 28th. Winner announced August 29th!

I devoured this book in almost one sitting and it will be given a 9.4/10, Adrian and Gillian blew my socks off! (My review will follow later this week).
ALL THE RIGHT NOTES…
Gillian Forrester spent most of her life running from who and what she came from. Until Miles came along. From the moment she held the tiny newborn her older sister didn't want, Gillian stopped running and began to build a life for herself and her adopted son. Now, thirteen years later, as Gillian's sister lay dying, she reveals the father's identity and makes Gillian promise to find him.
Adrian Brown is the epitome of the successful rock star. He's seen and done it all, with few regrets. It takes a lot to shock him but the bombshell that he has a thirteen-year-old son rocks his world. And Adrian is even more surprised when the buttoned-up, elegant woman who's raising Miles snags his erotic and romantic attention.
The last thing Gillian expected was to find herself getting hot and heavy with a person like Adrian. But as much as she wants to open up and give herself fully to this amazing man, she's afraid the secrets of her past and Adrian's problems with trusting people may keep them apart for good. If love isn't enough can they find the trust they need?
And now the quotes:
Lauren Dane's and my Favorite Quotes in common:
Miles skidded into the kitchen and looked from his mother to his father and chuckled. “You’re in big trouble, mate. When she starts sounding like an episode of EastEnders I usually just run for it. Protect your junk.” And with that, he turned and bolted from the room. p 208
Adrian Brown laid waste to her reserve. Barging in and taking up residence inside her. In her heart and head and damn it, it felt good. And right. He understood her, darkness and all. p 212
Some of Lauren Dane's Favorite Quotes:
And just like that, she stood. “All right then. Clock’s ticking, Adrian Brown. Dazzle me and I might just give you an A.” (p 81)
Some American things were simply undoubtedly better. Button-down jeans were one of those things. A zipper was sexy enough, yes, but that sound as the metal button cleared the denim seemed to mainline straight to her clit. p 104
"I know we’re sort of like the Borg, sweeping in and taking over with our bright colors and loud voices.” p 140 (Erin to Gillian)
One brow slid up as if it could not believe his audacity. Which only made him more audacious just to poke at her and bring out her English. p 153
“So fucking nothing. Stop being so defensive. It just means you’re having to work for it. Welcome to the real world where the rest of us have to rely on our wits instead of our guitars to get women.” p 180 Cope to Adrian
“Your mother makes me nervous. In a good way,” he amended quickly.
“She doesn’t bring men around. She doesn’t date much. She lets you get away with stuff she’d shoot someone else in the face over.”
“Christ, she’s going to kill me when she hears you say that. Stop with the shooting-in-the-face references.” p 206 between Adrian and Miles
She was his family. The mother of his son. And it meant so much that he’d have loved her just for that. But there was more because she was his. That’s all he could say to himself that felt most true. He’d looked at her and his entire being had gone taut and he’d thought, Mine. p 229
Some of my Favorite Quotes:
Brody opened his front door. “Why’d you knock? You have a key.”
Adrian moved past his brother and kicked off his shoes in the hall, hanging his jacket on the way.
“It was late. I didn’t want to just walk in. You and Elise could have been doing all manner of things and my fragile psyche can’t handle that.” (p.34)
His speech had a cadence to it, slow and honeyed. Not southern, but something similar. As if he liked to roll his words over his palate before he gave them up. (p.39)
She got a pretty good feel of what he was packing when she’d been against her hallway wall, his body pressing against hers with just the right amount of pressure.
She shivered. A dominant kiss from a laid-back man. (p.73)
“He loves the ladies, does our Alexander.” Erin cocked her head at her son, who blew her a kiss. “I’m afraid he’s just as terminally charming as the rest of the men in this family. Luckily, we’re a hearty bunch of womenfolk and can whip them into shape.” (p.138)
He touched her just right. Keeping her on the edge of climax as he filled her over and over.
And when it broke, it hit her hard, shattering all around her, pulling at her composure, threatening to unravel her.
So she threw herself into it. Into that very moment as desire ran wild through her veins as orgasm turned her inside out. (p.142)
He laughed again. “Do you know I think I laugh more with you than I ever have before, and I laughed a lot as it was.”
“I bet you’re agitated a lot more too.”
“Yes. Can’t deny it. Also can’t deny it makes me hot. So be it, I’m a weirdo. I can accept it. Your prickly, buttoned-up-to-the-neck thing works my libido hard.”
She sniffed delicately. “I may have noticed. It’s a good thing for us both. Not many men have a bitchy woman fetish.”
“I do believe you just made me guffaw with that one. They do say there’s a lid for every pot. You’re my lid, Gillian. Bitchy and all.” (p. 265)
She eyed his hand and then his face again, narrowing her gaze. He wiggled his hand again and she sighed. “You’re very bad for my constitution. I find myself breaking all sorts of personal Gillian Forrester rules for you.”
“From you, this is a great declaration of love.”
“Hm.”
“There she is.”
She sighed. “Really, if you’re a beast and you call me to tell me mean things again, I will carve your bits off with a rusty spoon I’ve sharpened against the pavement.” (p. 291)
So those were the quotes!

Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match . . . dot.com. An on-line dating service is not Michelle Snow’s idea of how to find love but when the Big 3-0 hits, Michelle decides she has nothing to lose since she hasn’t brought a date home in ten years, she’s professionally burned out, and her climb up the corporate ladder has come at the expense of abandoning her sweet dream: to own a boutique cupcakery.
Todd Bracken, early thirties and a successful technology consultant, isn’t exactly a player after being off the market for ten years, and pours himself into his dual passions of martial arts and home-sweet-home renovations. Only there’s no one to come home to so he decides to give Match.com a try. Todd isn’t so sure the Internet dating scene is his thing – until a message pops up in the wee hours on a weekend night: “I like your smile.” Todd likes – a lot – the whole package that glides into a French bistro in Washington, D.C.
It’s serious mojo-at-first-sight but there’s a glitch: Todd and Michelle live in different cities. Will love find its way in the digital age with a You’ve Got Mail courtship when video cam kisses just aren’t enough? And when Todd challenges Michelle to not only go for her dream but also let him share it, will they be able to make it happen together despite obstacles more plentiful than a shower of rainbow sprinkles?
Title: The Icing on the Cake
Author: Alison Kent
Series: True Vows, Reality Based Romance ™
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: HCI Books
Year of release: 2010, September 14
Format: Tradesize Paperback
Source: received e-copy for review from Publisher as part of a blog-tour from TLC
First line: "Michelle! Dana’s here!"
Elbowing open her bedroom door while fastening the clasp on her necklace, Michelle Snow called out, "Be right there!" in response to Christina's update.
Memorable Scenes:
- Todd and Blake's banter in the gym's locker room > very funny
- Bakery tour in NYC > sweet in every sense of the word, and made me crave cupcakes
THE ICING ON THE CAKE is a sweet, contemporary romance about Michelle Snow, who puts up her profile on an online dating site after a talk with her longtime friends about dating or rather, the lack thereof. Cute and witty software consultant Todd Bracken is the one picked by Michelle based on his online profile. They hit it off immediately, both online and in real life after their first face-to-face meeting and a lovely romance develops through emails, texts and dates, which were funny and endearing.
Michelle is the middle child of three and in real estate marketing but she dreams of opening her own cupcake bakery. She’s independent, considerate and not a loner but used to doing things alone and on her own. Slowly she learns to lean on, trust and share with Todd.
Todd is the youngest child of three and the proverbial anchor in the storm. He’s dependable and romantic. He’s also cute and funny. He uses humor as way of defense and coping with stuff. Though he’s had plenty of dating experience he has never met and felt immediately so comfortable with someone as he does with Michelle.
Both Michelle and Todd are sweet and easy-going, yet driven and with passion for everything they do. It’s a perfect match, completing and complementing each other and compatible in many, many ways.
Though both True Vows books I’ve read cover different stages and origins of a romantic relationship and do this on different intensity levels I think each one describes romance, love and relationships in it’s own original and unique way.
What I did miss in THE ICING ON THE CAKE was a bit of intensity, a bit of conflict and yet that’s also what makes it real, because that’s funny enough I saw a lot of similarities with my own love story (I also “met” my husband online and there isn’t much conflict in our relationship). Alison Kent delivered this lovely book through very smooth writing and laced it with the humor I love so much in my romances. Subtle humor and teasing banter alternated and gave the book a genuine feel-good vibe.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE is a contemporary romance that initially starts as an online dating romance but quickly moves on to a true real life romance and slowly evolves into a solid and deep loving relationship. It's very hard to pinpoint what I love about these Reality Based Romance ™ books but I definitely love the down-to-earth, boy/girl next door, "real" characters, they appeal to me on a whole different level than non- Reality Based Romance ™ characters do. I find them wonderful to read as they form a down-to-earth counterpart to the high-intensity imaginary romances I normally read and I am definitely looking forward to the next one in this series.
One last thing about THE ICING ON THE CAKE. It made me crave cupcakes like mad and if I wasn't on a diet I'd whipped out the cake pan and made myself some of the cupcakes described in this book because they sounded just heavenly and delicious!
Favorite Quote:
Was The One really out there? Someone not to complete her, but to complement her? To see the good in her and make her better? To allow her to do the same and to build on that trust, creating something together that would be bigger than either of them could be alone?

Today I'm happy to welcome Dee Tenorio to my humble little World of Romance. Make sure to answer her question at the end of the post for a chance to win a copy SHAKEN, her awesome and heartbreaking novella, that came out October 19th! My review of SHAKEN can be found HERE
Many Shades of Love
I've had a lot of time to think about love over the years of my writing. Love is supposed to be my topic of expertise, but you know, it's not as simple as studying a topic and knowing all the right answers. At any point of my life, I thought I knew what love was. Thought I understood it, only to discover that what I knew wasn't complete. Love changes.
When you're young and have yet to truly learn the value of anything, love is so easy to feel and understand. You love mommy and daddy and brother and sister and puppy and kitty and teacher and friends... The list is unending because if it makes you happy, it's love. And that isn't wrong.
Get a little older and love gets a little more complicated. There's different kinds now. Some like roots that are just a part of you. Some that are new and exciting. You find out that what you love, you might not always get. Love isn't always fair. Sometimes, even if you do get it, it's not going to stay. Love can hurt and those first, wrenching slices of loss can cut deep. While memorable, you also discover that you can recover. Learn from it. And that's not wrong either.
When you're grown, love can be consuming. Blinding. Destructive. It can be exhilirating and fulfilling. It can give you a connection and ground you when your life is upside down or up in the clouds. You've learned what it is to love deeply and give a part of yourself away, fully accepting that the part you give isn't coming back. But new parts come along to take it's place. Love from others—the ones you choose and the ones who choose you. And sometimes, the hardest lessons are how to recover when the pieces of our hearts are taken away.
I always thought of love as a feeling. An emotion or a connection only. But it continually surprises me. Love is all those things, but it's also a comfort. A choice. A gift. A joy. Love is what's left when we're gone. What gives us a reason to keep going when we're here.
I know that in my field, I'm supposed to have answers or insight, but the truth is...I'm still learning. I'm still figuring out the ways that love grows and changes. I'm still trying to understand how it scars and heals, how it makes a better person out of me.
So take a moment to help me learn. Tell me how love has made your life better and I'll enter you into a drawing to win a free copy of my latest novella, "Shaken".
Hope to hear from you,
Dee

Bio:
Dee Tenorio has a few reality issues. After much therapy for the problem—if one can call being awakened in the night by visions of hot able-bodied men a problem—she has proved incurable. It turns out she enjoys tormenting herself by writing sizzling, steamy romances of various genres spanning paranormal mystery dramas, contemporaries and romantic comedies. Preferably starring the sexy, somewhat grumpy heroes described above and smart-mouthed heroines who have much better hair than she does.
The best part is, no more therapy bills!
Well, not for Dee, anyway. Her husband and kids, on the other hand...

Thirteen stories up. Two broken hearts. One last chance…
Surgeon Grant Sullivan’s once-perfect life lies in ruins. His daughter is gone—lost in a tragic accident he dare not allow himself to remember—and his beautiful wife now stares at him from across a legal table, insisting she wants nothing from him.
Julia Sullivan lost everything, especially her illusions about her marriage, after the accident. Her grief only seemed to drive Grant further into his emotional shell—except for the nights he turned to her in silent, furious passion. Unable to live like a ghost in her old life, she’s packed up what’s left of her broken heart and is ready to move on. Alone.
Determined to break their stalemate, Grant follows Julia onto the elevator just in time for an earthquake. Trapped for hours in a building pressure cooker of unspoken pain, he’ll do anything to remind her what she’s leaving behind, as deliciously as he can. But giving her what she needs to save their marriage is the one thing that could destroy his soul.
Title: Shaken
Author: Dee Tenorio
Series: Stand Alone
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Samhain Publishing
Year of release: 2010, October 19
Format: eBook, short novella
Source: Received for review via author
First line: God, she’s beautiful.
Memorable Scenes:
-The first sexy times scene in the elevator > hot with a hint of emotional urgency
-The flashback to the accident scene > so heartbreaking and awfully sad I was sobbing while reading it
A car accident that cost them their daughter left Grant and Julia Sullivan devastated. When Julia doesn't find the emotional support she needs from Grant she files for divorce as she can no longer live with a man who seems incapable of mourning his daughter and only interested in the sexual side of their relationship. Grant does mourn the loss, however he's not one who expresses his feelings easily and prefers to use his desire for his wife and the solace he finds in their physical bond to push away the pain. Now at opposite ends of the negotiation table they seem further apart than ever, until an earthquake not only shakes up the building they're in trapping them in an elevator but also they are forced to face their emotions and grief together.
Normally I always tell something about the main characters and though this story was centered on Grant and Julia, the real focus was on them working through their traumatic experience and trying to save their marriage and the feelings that bind them together. And while their personalities play a big part in that, they were not what caught my attention while reading this book, at least not as much as the effect of their emotions did.
My heart broke for Grant and his loss, not only the physical loss of his child but also the emotional loss of the woman he loves profoundly. It also broke for Julia, a woman alone in her pain and grief, desperately trying to find an emotional connection over their mutual loss with the man she loves deeply.
SHAKEN is an emotional powerful novella in which Dee Tenorio delves into feelings of loss, guilt and grief which such rawness and sincerity I was truly moved, not to say shaken, by this short story.
And next to the emotional punch this story also more than delivered in the erotic department with some hot and sexy love scenes.
From the very first page this book put a lump in my throat with its intensity, heartbreak and emotional need that spoke from every word, sentence and page. If you’re looking for a read that touches you in that deep, dark place in your heart where loss resides once you’ve suffered losing a loved one, this book is it and you should definitely read it, and make sure you keep the tissues close by.

She shook her head and looked away. “Why can’t you just let me go?” (...) Because he needed her, because his entire world failed without her. Because being with her was the only way he could keep the pain at bay, even if he didn’t deserve a single minute in her presence. He’d failed her when she’d needed him the most. He didn’t deserve to be in this room with her right now. But still, all he wanted was the chance to—if not make it right—make it better.
Her hands found purchase on his shoulders and their gazes locked. Everything locked. Neither of them moved but for their panting breaths. His need was raw in his eyes. More than sex. He needed her. To touch him back. To give as much as he was giving to her. To make this more than an act of desperation; two bodies meeting while their hearts took different paths. As if he had no idea that her heart beat in his chest.
“I need you, Jules. Every minute of every day, I need you.”
“No you don’t.” If he’d needed her, he wouldn’t have pushed her away when she tried to comfort him. Back when she’d thought his silences held secrets and pain instead of indifference.
“Yes, I do. I can’t even breathe anymore without you.” Down. She felt him drawing them both down to the floor. She went, her body flowing into his, over his. He lay back on the carpet, pulling her with him, fitting her mouth to his, not to kiss, but to breathe her in. “You’re air to me, Julia. You’re the f#cking air.”

New York lobbyist Michael Davoli feels like he’s been sucker punched when he meets Anne Miller at a concert. When fate leads him to move into same Albany apartment building where Anne lives, Michael falls hard. After all, Anne’s hot, his dog likes her, and she’s catnip to the senses after she picks a lock faster than Sydney Bristow can disarm a nuke.
Always fiercely independent, Anne’s crackerjack reporting skills and keen intellect are no match for the chemical reaction she has to this man with electric blue eyes. But while Mike effortlessly holds her with his gaze, he withholds the embrace she longs for. Why is he so distant? Has Anne misread his signals? When he finally confesses that he suffers from a neurological disorder that he’s learned to disguise from others but could keep him from ever holding her through the night—she makes a choice that changes the rest of her life.
Anne isn’t about to let anything like Tourette’s Syndrome keep her from the man of her dreams. But Mike has a second secret. Will this secret be the one that even a grand passion cannot survive?
Title: Hard To Hold
Author: Julie Leto
Series: True Vows, Reality Based Romance ™
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: HCI Books
Year of release: 2010, September 14
Format: Tradesize Paperback
Source: received e-copy for review from Publisher as part of a blog-tour from TLC
First line: "Your problem is that you're too picky."
Anne Miller is a journalist, a crime reporter. She’s witty, bubbly, cheerful, and open. She’s in a knitting-group and an avid fan of Jack Bauer. The moment she decides that she’s quite happy being single and not going to search after love, fate bumps into her in the form of Mike Davoli at a music concert. Mike is a campaign coordinator for the Quality Education Initiative. He has Tourette's Syndrome. He’s organized, sweet, honest and a very big fan of a band called Phish.
I really like this concept of romance novels based on reality. Reading romance in various genres has made me believe in easy, almost magical solutions to hurdles that inevitably surge in a starting relationship and HARD TO HOLD made me see again that building and maintaining a relationship is hard work and the road to a Happily Ever After is paved with struggles, disappointments, conflict and challenges to go with the chemistry, sexual attraction and soul-mate kind of love.
There was one minor thing that bothered me reading this books and that was the conflict/argument between Anne and Michael and Michael's reasoning. This felt a little forced and didn't quite work for me, but I did love that it wasn’t brushed over or easily solved, which made the romance that much stronger in my opinion.
The second half of HARD TO HOLD tells the story where other romance novels end and to me portrayed the real story after the Happily Ever After where most romance novels end. Reading this book was refreshing and I heartily welcome this new brand of romance.
A sweet, warm and funny contemporary was just what I needed and just what I got from HARD TO HOLD. This book proved to me that you don't need hot and heavy dirty sex scenes to write an excellent and poignant contemporary love story and make me a fan. Don't get me wrong, I like hot monkey sex scenes, a lot, but they are not obligatory for me to thoroughly enjoy a book as reading HARD TO HOLD definitely proved to me.
Seeing the attraction build, slowly but intensely was just delightful to read. I smiled and grinned numerous times at the subtle humor that was delivered as easily and smoothly as the love story. And the wedding put the cherry on the cake by making me tear up.
I highly recommend HARD TO HOLD if you love subtle humor, sweet romance dosed with a healthy bit of reality and a HEA that is just perfect. And I am also definitely going to read more of Julie Leto's work as I do have some on my huge TBR and this first encounter with her writing has definitely left me wanting more.
Favorite Quotes:
There was a special place in hell for people who insisted on fixing up their friends--a place only slightly less horrifying than the dungeons reserved for those who sprang arresting-looking guys on their neighbors with no advance notice.
"You like dogs?" he asked.
Okay it was a stupid obvious question, but with moisture absent from his mouth and his bloodstream pumping with the kind of powerful attraction he hadn’t felt in a very long time, he was lucky to form even three words of coherent conversation
One of them shut the door, probably with a foot since both arms and hands were engaged in the finest make-up kiss ever shared between a guy who’d temporarily lost his mind and the woman who had the amazing capacity to forgive.

My contribution to this Global Warming blog tour is a review of the Cougar Challenge Series. I'll tell you: if these books don't warm you up a little, nothing will...
Why this review and this series?
When I was approached to participate in the International Heat-Global Warming Blog Tour, my contribution to the tour was supposed to be a review of a red-hot read. I thought a long time about what to review. As I didn’t have the time to read a new book by one of the International Heat authors and the books of International Heat authors I had read, were already reviewed on the blog, the only thing that came to mind was the Cougar Challenge series that I read in January because A) some of the authors are members of the International Heat Blog and B) This series defines red-hot read!!
Before I start my review of the Cougar Challenge I must make a confession first: I once was sort of a cougar. I was a 26-year-old dating an 18-year-old. At that age it didn't work out. The guy was sweet and all and the sex was hot!!! But we were at very different stages in life and no amount of sweetness or hot sex can make up for the fact that it's annoying when your working your but off trying to make ends meet, your boyfriends' only concern is that his college hours are interfering with his time to play videogames. With this in mind I was very interested in reading the Cougar Challenge books when I stumbled over the series, mentioned on Mari Carr’s website.
Premise of the series (taken from Ciana Stone’s website):
The Cougar Challenge
They went to the RomantiCon convention because they loved erotic romance. They left as friends. Seven women who will challenge each other to break away from the drudgery that holds them captive, to walk away from the past and into a new future.
Come join these seven women as they discover that there's still a lot of living - and loving to do. And see what happens when they find themselves smack in the middle of some sizzling hot situations with younger men who remind them that there's still plenty of fire in the furnace.
So without further ado, find below my review of this hot series!
Play it Again, Sam by Samantha Kane
Cover Blurb:
Monica Allen is one cougar who isn’t ready for retirement yet. She’s always been attracted to younger men, even married and divorced one. She thought she was through with them for good. Then she meets a group of like-minded dies at Romanticon, and they form a blog celebrating younger men, Tempt the Cougar.
After another lonely Friday night, Monica challenges her friends to find a younger man to make their fantasies come true. Why shouldn’t she have a younger man if that’s what she wants? She doesn’t have to marry him—been there, done that, threw away the tee shirt. But for a night of hot sex? Hell yes.
Sam Lincoln refuses to be just a fantasy. He’s a graduate student with a yen for older women and he may have just found the one to make his own fantasies come true. With a little help from his roommate Josh, Sam fulfills Monica’s deepest desires. Can he convince this sexy cougar to give him a chance at happily ever after?
Tells the story of Monica Allen (38), an assistant director HR and Sam Lincoln (26), a grad student/bartender.
This was a very hot story with a threesome theme. The story is told from both Monica and Sam’s POV and the only true secondary character of importance was Josh, Sam’s roommate and best friend and the third in the threesome.
In this first installment of the series Monica sets out to find a one-night stand with a younger man and after a wild night with 2 of them finds a keeper in Sam who has always had a thing for older women. Sam allows Monica to have the night of her life with both him and Josh but soon it’s clear that Sam wants exclusivity with Monica.
If you like one confident woman, two hot younger men and a wonderful story with scorching sex, look no further: PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM is the one for you.

Beauty of Sunset by Lynne Connolly
Cover Blurb:
Edie Howard is facing the public for the first time in years, and it’s crisis time. She can’t compete with her former self, top supermodel Sunset, so she visits a plastic surgeon. It’s time for a change. John Sung takes one look at Edie and knows he can’t operate on her. He signs off as her doctor and makes her a bet – if he can make her love her body as it is, she won’t have the operations.
John’s bet involves close examinations—and torrid, sleepless nights. Their passion is far more than either expects, and John begins to wonder if he’ll ever get enough of this woman. Edie just counts her blessings. She knows it won’t last long. Why would he want her when she’s ten years older than he is.
Tells the story of the English Edie Howard (45), former model: Sunset/Adelaide and Dr. John Sung (35), a famous plastic surgeon.
In this installment Edie, a former model is not satisfied with how she’s starting to look at age 45, so she seeks the help of a plastic surgeon. However when John meets her for her first consultation he is convinced she doesn’t need any surgery because she is gorgeous the way she is and they make a deal that if he can also convince Edie that he likes her body the way it is, she won’t go through with the surgery.
This was a more emotional story with no elaborate sexual themes. As the majority of the story is told from Edie’s POV, I did miss having more of John’s POV but despite that I felt John’s intensity and passion. He made both Edie and me shudder. Underneath the intensity there's insecurity lingering, left over from his past and when he thinks Edie's hurt him, he lashes out, pretending their affair meant nothing to him.
If you’re looking for a story that’s both emotional and hot, Lynne Connolly knows how to deliver that and just with one-on-one, mostly vanilla, sex scenes.
Rating: 7.5 out of 10
Winters' Thaw by Dalton Diaz
Cover Blurb:
Forty-one and divorced, Elizabeth Winters is determined to figure out what the big deal is about sex. Research brings six incredible women into her life, and a blog challenge is born. She’s going to meet all of her needs with a younger man, if she can let her inner feline out to play.
Thirty-year- old Kevin Springer loves solving puzzles, and “Elle” has him aching to fit the pieces. She’s hiding something, and he’s determined to get it out of her. Especially when he realizes he wants more than her offered no strings attached wild night.
Tells the story of smart and straightforward Elizabeth Winters (41), an OR nurse and sexy, laidback Kevin Springer (30), and engineer who plays bass in a band in his spare time and has a wicked sense of humor,
In this installment Elizabeth takes up the cougar challenge when she decides to visit a bar to see the band of her co-worker's husband play. The bass player catches her attention and vice versa. They set out for a no-strings-attached we'll-see-how-long-it-lasts fling as Elizabeth is only out for a good sexual experience and Kevin wants to stay away from heavy commitment. But no-strings isn't an option when they also connect on a non-sexual level.
Again this was a pretty vanilla story told from both POVs. With the easy and light writing style it was very fast read and not only because of the modest page count. Diaz's writing reads very easily. Too short, wanted more on Elle and Kevin. Felt like an extended prologue. A very good one at that!
Dalton Diaz delivered a novella filled with subtle humor alternated with sizzling, beautifully written sex scenes.

Hot to Trot by Desiree Holt
Cover Blurb
Buying a ranch on eBay was the wildest thing Autumn Kelley had ever done. Past forty, she’d pretty much written excitement out of her life. But then she discovered the ranch came with a foreman who made every pulse in her body pound and who could give her an orgasm just by looking at her. As if that weren’t enough, he had a friend equally as mouth-watering, and the two of them took Autumn on an erotic trip that outdid any fantasy she could every have imagined. If sex with one hot boy toy was fantastic, then sex with two at the same time took her over the top. But what will she do when she comes down from the orgasmic high?
Tells the story of inhibited but not shy Autumn Kelley (41) and the quintessential cowboy Mitchell Brand (32)
In this installment Autumn decides to start a new life by buying a ranch, on eBay no less, a rundown ranch in the middle of nowhere, Texas. She wants to go from old, boring and conservative to adventurous, wild, sexy and impulsive. And wild, sexy and impulsive is what she finds on the ranch where Mitch introduces her to some hot nights with the help of his friend Randy. To Autumn and Randy it's a roll in the hay but Mitch develops feelings for Autumn and wants commitment.
This was a very explicit and hot story with a threesome/ménage theme, which was told from Autumn’s POV exclusively. I really missed Mitch’s POV because now I only got to know him through Autumn’s POV and their dialogues and that kind of made the story a bit one-dimensional.
I liked the story but I also wanted a bit more on the emotional level. Do not get me wrong, it was hot, absolutely, however for me, the story kept at the surface with the focus more on the sexual part of erotic romance
If you like your erotic romance red-hot, a cowboy who has the dirty talking part down pat and you’re not looking for deep emotions than you will love HOT TO TROT!

Assume the Positions by Mari Carr
Cover Blurb:
Damn Cougar challenge!
Rachel’s thankful for the new friends she met while attending an erotica-book convention. They instantly connected and began sharing the relationship woes unique to older single women on their Tempt the Cougar blog. Then Monica issues that challenge… How is Rachel going to convince a younger man to have sex with her? Hell, even she doesn’t want to look at herself naked. To control her growing angst, she makes a list of eligible men then… Nothing. It’s been too long and her divorce was too painful. She’ll never be able to do this.
Ethan, one of Rachel’s physical therapy patients, is pissed when he learns of the challenge. Not because he finds it silly—because he’s not on Rachel’s list! So he does what any self-assured young stud would do. The luscious police officer gives her a copy of the Kama Sutra then asks her to make a new list.
And assume the positions…
Tells the story of down-to-earth, modest and sensible Rachel Bridges (37), physical therapist and stubborn, intuitive and competitive Ethan Russell (28), police officer
In this installment it’s Rachel’s turn to take up the cougar challenge. Normally she’s the happy-go-lucky one but a bit down lately as she would like to be more adventurous and daring/wild. She's been dealt a bad marriage card with an ex who used her to get through medical school and then dump her for a young, blond nurse. They say Mr. Right just doesn't come knocking on your door but in Rachel's case he came walking into her office at the right time. The challenge Ethan lays down for Rachel involves more than just plain having fun with a younger man, she has to make a list of Kama Sutra positions she’d like to try out with him.
This story was again pretty vanilla, with just the Kama Sutra to spice it up, but let me tell you: it was definitely spiced up! Not in the least because of Ethan. I must say he’s the hottest cougar victim of the bunch, with Kevin (Winters' Thaw, Dalton Diaz) and Lee (Cam’s Holiday, Ciana Stone) a close second and third. Even though this story too was told exclusively from the heroine’s (Rachel’s) POV it bothered me less than in Desiree Holt’s installment because I got to know Ethan’s character really well through Rachel and the sense of humor they both had. I really connected with Rachel! Maybe it's the age (37 too) and her love for lists which I vehemently share.
I loved the pace and the humorous, light undertone in the writing. Mari Carr has an agreeable and easy writing style that reads very smoothly. ASSUME THE POSITIONS is one of my favorites of the series. I loved everything about it and could’ve read hundreds more pages of Ethan and Rachel.
This book makes you wanna get the Kama Sutra and check out some of those positions. If you’re looking for truly the sexiest and spine tingling sex scenes, ASSUME THE POSITIONS won’t disappoint!

Sin on Skin by Mari Freeman
Cover Blurb:
Wild women do…
That’s the theme for the friends Stevie Jones found at an erotic-romance convention. But as the women share their experiences with younger guys on their Tempt the Cougar blog, Stevie discovers she’s the least wild of the bunch. Finding a younger man isn’t the problem; after a lifetime of unfulfilled desires, Stevie needs a younger ‘alpha’ man. In the meantime, getting a tattoo is an easy, safe way to begin ramping up her wild side.
Tattoo artist Errol knows instantly what Stevie needs, and it’s not just a bit of ink. He’s hot, young—and he’s just invited Stevie to his private BDSM club. Before you can say “green light”, Stevie is experiencing things she’d only read in her favorite erotic novels. Sinful toys, spanking benches and voyeurism are just some of the stops on what will become the wildest ride of her life.
Reader Advisory: This hot little number contains a scorching scene in which the heroine becomes a plaything for others—three others, in fact—including one very demanding Domme.
Tells the story of self-proclaimed science geek, independent Stevie Jones (44), head of a pharmaceutical lab and pharmaceutical project manager and charming, seductive and confident Errol (32), tattoo artist (Sin On Skin) and BDSM club owner (Sin City)
In this installment Stevie's idea of going wild is getting a tattoo, but she'll soon discover that getting a tattoo is just the start of a very wild ride into Cougar land when her tattooist is a skilled and intense Dom, taking Stevie step by step along the way to ultimate submission.
This is a BDSM - Dom/sub themed story told from Stevie’s POV only.
It was very well written and I was intrigued by the way Mari Freeman describes the D/s scenes. I loved the explanation of the nuances of the Dom/sub lifestyle.
However, the group angle (especially the f/f part of it) was new to me and not something I prefer in my erotica reads, it was on the fringes of what I'm comfortable with. Also, the usage of a certain word that I don't like kept pulling me out of the rhythm and intensity of the story. I understand the context within it was used called for it and it fit, but the word just rubs me the wrong way and that's MY problem, it doesn't affect quality of the writing.
That being said it was the novella in the series that in which I had the least emotional connection with the characters. When I finished I still didn’t have the feeling I got to know Stevie and Errol. Therefore I must conclude that it was the least favorite of the series for me.
SIN ON SKIN started very promising, hot and great but along the way due to some sexual topics that are not my thing it fizzled to an average read. Still if you are comfortable with these topics I think it will be a novella you can really appreciate and love.

Cam's Holiday by Ciana Stone
Cover Blurb:
Fantasies about being with a younger man? Before her husband left her for a younger model, they wouldn’t have crossed Cam’s mind, but now she has plenty. After meeting a group of ladies at RomantiCon, Cam and the women form a blog celebrating younger men—Tempt the Cougar. Then they challenge each other to find a younger man to make their fantasies come true. It’s not a husband hunt. It isn’t about love. It’s about a night of hot, steamy sex.
When Lee Holiday enters Cam’s life, he seems like the right man for the job. A personal trainer, he makes it clear he’d love to ring Cam’s bell. And ring it he does. Repeatedly. Cam’s found sexual nirvana. Only Lee’s not going to be happy with a short-term, sex-only relationship. He wants the whole nine yards and is out to prove to Cam that he’s more than just a holiday from her normal life. He’s the man of her dreams.
Tells the story of quick-witted and lonesome Camille "Cam" Stockton (42), events planner and seductive and masterful Lee Holiday (32), personal trainer
In this installment Cam’s ex-husband and his new trophy wife have left her with low self-confidence and lonely despite her work and friends. When her ex’s new wife taunts her once again, this time at the gym, she uses her personal trainer to prove she’s still attractive. What she doesn’t know is that Lee is very much attracted to her and what should be a obligatory date to a fund raiser Cam has organized, turns into much more. Because of fear and insecurity she doesn't want to accept that she's fallen in love with Lee and keeps pretending it's all about sex and having a good time while it lasts.
This story just briefly touched the D/s theme, with Lee being very masterful and a natural Dom. Not the one who lives the lifestyle fully but who is naturally dominant. The banter and flirting between Cam and Lee was the perfect counterpart to the hot and explicit love scenes. If you know my reading preferences, and me, you know I like a dash of humor in my reading and the scene where Cam receives the torc is very funny. I would totally do the same thing and be just as befuddled
This last installment of the series for now was told from both POVs. Something I really liked because it made me feel really connected to the characters again. And after an emotionally less intense installment with CAM’S HOLIDAY I was treated to the kind of erotic romance I prefer: hot AND emotional, leaving room for the development of feelings besides the sexual aspect. Ciana Stone has a smooth and easy writing, which I took an immediate liking to. She was the only author of these seven that made me wanna grab some tissues because of the beautiful and emotional ending. Felt the least like it was a prologue to me but more finished and well-rounded story.
Gyms and me don't go well together but this story made me want to run to the nearest gym and find me a Lee of my own. And I’m sure I am not the only one after reading this story.
CAM’S HOLIDAY was the perfect ending to the first stint of this series and one of my favorites of these 7 novellas.
Rating: 9 out of 10
====================================
Overall opinion of the series:
I thoroughly enjoyed these adventures in Cougar land.
I read the 7 books that are published at the moment back-to-back from the moment I started the first one and enjoyed the series and would recommend it to everyone looking stories within a series that are all different. Some are emotional, others humorous, other more erotic but they all are, without a doubt, hot and scintillating.
I loved these 7 books and am looking forward to further installments in this Cougar Challenge Series by some new and fresh contributors.
Overall Rating: 7.5 out of 10
Favorite Quotes:
From PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM:
“Exactly! You have nothing in common. What are you going to talk about?” Monica actually pulled the phone away from her ear and stared at it incredulously for a moment before she put it back to her ear and snorted. “I have no intention of saying much more than ‘right there and harder”.
From BEAUTY OF SUNSET:
“I love how you left that little bit of hair there.”
“It’s called a Brazilian.” He smiled. “I know. But on you it’s called heaven.”
From WINTER’S THAW:
There were a few single guys dotting the barstools but there were reasons they were alone. Like the guy who had to be approaching sixty who kept winking at a small posse of young women as he pointed to his chest. His T-shirt read, Free Mustache Rides. Not only was he gross, his lip was bare.
From HOT TO TROT:
And then she caught sight of a hunk straight out of the wettest wet dream, the most mouthwatering specimen of manhood she’d ever laid eyes on, heading toward her from the barn.
From ASSUME THE POSITIONS:
Heat crept to her face at his question. Her ex-husband’s idea of dirty talk was wanting to know if she’d showered before coming to bed.
From SIN ON SKIN:
More than anything else, though, was the fact that Stevie Jones would never be able to let go like that. How could she be a strong, independent woman if she wanted to besubmissive to a man?
From CAM’S HOLIDAY:
"Lee Holiday was, by far, the sexiest man she had seen in a long, long time. But it was more than his appearance. An aura of power and an unspoken promise of pleasure seemed to hover around him like an intoxicating cloud."
